Many older adults and people with disabilities need more than just a ride. Some may need a helping hand to walk from their front door to the vehicle, others may need someone to ride with them or stay with them at their destination. We know that family members and friends provide a lot of this help, but sometimes, no one is available, resulting in canceled medical appointments and lack of access to essential services. Many transportation programs struggle to accommodate these varied needs. Trusted Ride Certified is a model that recruits and trains volunteer “Chaperones” to ride along with older adults and people with disabilities who need assistance to ride. The ride itself may be provided by a taxi company, Uber or Lyft, a volunteer transportation provider or even public transit. This webinar will highlight the experiences of two local organizations-one in Baltimore, MD, the other in South Central Connecticut – using this model of assisted transportation. Both organizations receive funding through Community Care Corps, a program of the U.S. Administration for Community Living.
